Information on Procedures of how a Sculpture goes from idea to the finished product: v Research materials of all subjects are gathered. This would include pictures, video, clothing examples and/or artifacts to be included in the sculpture scenes. v Tom creates rough miniature clay maquettes of each proposed sculpture that depict shape, movement and style. v Digitals of maquettes are sent to the Committee for approval, suggestions and comment. v Once the overall design of the sculptures is approved, maquettes are sized up into life-size foam armatures. To this foam, a structural armature of pipes and steel must be added internally and externally while working closely with the foundry who will be casting the pieces to determine the most strategic places for cuts for mold and wax development. The armature must be have these internal supports of steel to give the maximum amount of support to the clay sculpture as it is being worked on. Next, several layers of clay are spread over all of the foam structure and the actual sculpting of the detail into the clay is finished. v When each sculpture is completed, a final approval must be made by the Customer prior to taking the finished sculpture to the chosen Foundry for mold making, casting and finishing. v A master mold maker makes one master mold of the sculpture from which several editions could be poured. v A wax is made of each sculpture from the Master Mold. v After the wax is poured, it is dipped into a slurry and several layers of ceramic sand which must dry correctly between each of the 6 to 8 layers. v The wax is then melted out of the dried ceramic shell and hot, molten bronze is poured into the molds. After drying, this ceramic shell is broken off and the metal chasing begins. v Pieces of the sculpture are welded back together and the Artist’s detail is ensured throughout this process. v The final finish or “patina” for coloring of the sculptures is done under the Artist’s direction. Artist participates in all stages of the casting process. v The foundry time is anticipated to be between 6 to 12 weeks per piece at the foundry. Several pieces can be cast simultaneously at the foundry. General Timelines for life-size or monumental .... so that client can anticipate the procedure:
