TEXT VERSION FOR BETTER READING: Tom White: “Sculptor of Life” Sculptor
Tom White has been quietly at work in his studio in the town of Bethel
for the past three years. The Artisit is, uniquely talented and
for the most part unheard of in fine art circles.
Today his work are quickly gaining attention. Art
connoisseur Howard Cooperman of the celebrated Howard Gallery in New
Hope, Penn., saw Tom White’s work on the internet and was taken aback
by its unique quality. “I
wish I could get more artists to use this much detail. His work is
simply beautiful. He has captured the character of his subjects in deep
subtle expressions that are moving and revealing.
This is a difficult thing for any artist to accomplish.”
White is able to capture indefinable things that make a character unique. In a feature article that appeared in the Art Issue of Port City Life, writer, Maggie Knowles, upon seeing a life-size bronze of a smiling Jesus noted "Though not a religious person, I feel a calm brush over me as I study the gentle face." White sculpts in plastilene clay that is then cast in fine art bronze in limited editions through the age old lost wax process. He personally oversees the patina of each original bronze. His sculptures are tapletop, pedestal and life-size. The life-size bronzes are particularly striking. Dr.
Frank Johnson, who commissioned White to sculpt a likeness of his
father, stated “It is so much like him that I speak to it
sometimes.” Linda King, owner of "Gallery of the
Master" in Loveland, Colo. contends that “Tom White is one of the
gifted few who not only creates life-like figures with all of the
correct proportions, but can also capture and express the life, the
heart, and the emotions of the person being sculpted.” A
native of Midland Texas, White is a self taught artist and craftsman.
He spent most of his life as a carpenter; then in 1991, never
having had a lesson; he was
suddenly struck with an intense desire to create art. His
talent was immediately recognized and validated by the largest foundry
in Texas which cast his first piece. They were under the
assumption that White had been a seasoned sculptor for at least 20
years. White
has continued to grow artistically and most of his work finds its way
into the mainstream through commissioned miniature and life-sized
religious figures, memorials, portrayals of historical events, and
wildlife sculptures among many other subjects. Although he has done
little to promote himself, his art has been featured by galleries in
Texas, Colorado, and Maine. White
feels that his painstaking attention to detail gives his work an
unmatched quality in expressing the spectrum of human emotions and has
earned him the reputation of “the sculptor of life.”
In White’s own words, “I believe that “the face” is the
mirror of the human soul and the map to the character of the spirit
within. All of my past
works have been geared to capturing that elusive quality that makes us
endure, grow, live and love in the faces of the subjects being depicted.
I feel I have a unique expertise for isolating and exposing the
character and emotions within that truly sets my work apart.
Striving to bring my subjects “to life” in finished bronze is
my main goal as an artist.” For
